It's not perfect, but it's in great shape for a launch 4X game, and it's really fun right now. Finally, throw in the best faction and scenario customization for a 4X at launch that I think I've ever seen, and you're there. Then mash that up with the ability to found cities, armies that don't require heroes, and city development that looks more like Civ 6 than HOMM. Imagine taking the hero focus, tactical combat, and magic from Heroes and improving on all of it. It's somewhere between HOMM and Civ with a splash of its own flavor. The former provide conventional soldiers, the latter usually provides monsters. The "Rally of the Lieges", which is HoMM-style recruitment that draws from your vassal city-states and annexed Ancient Wonders.Summoned units are almost always supernatural beings and drain your mana reserves rather than requiring pay. This is mostly like a typical 4X except that recruiting is separate from building construction and uses its own resource. Some units are racial/cultural (so you can only train Knights in the city of a feudal race) while others are based on research (so you can train White Witches anywhere, if you've researched them). Each city has a race, and can train conventional military units of that race.
